I made a short background story named After Us, a story for a 3d person shooter game.
After Us
Summary
An alien pilot survives the destruction of his spacecraft (destroyed by an opposing alien race). His escape capsule lands him on an unknown planet. In the landing process, sensors on his escape capsule detects that around his landing area there are a lot of artifacts (like buildings), one of them far from his landing area still has an energy reaction. After he lands on the planet, he discovers that those artifacts are actually ruins, that used to be a civilization, but have since been abandoned by their creators. He finds that a lot of wild animals living around the area, some of them are dangerouÄs carnivores. He has to protect himself. He starts off to find the artifact which has energy reaction, hopefully he can find something helpful that can give him a chance to leave this forsaken planet. When he arrives at his destination, it is actually a jail that the native species built to lock up the remaining power sources, which somehow lead them to abandoned their homeworld. The alien pilot will encounter many savage animals and drones sent from the enemy to kill him.
To build a reliable character I need more reasonable design, as the old design was for low-res model, so some designs are not good enough for a more realistic game, I need a lot modification of the character, then I was working in zbrush to create more details for the pilot. First, I changed the design of its boy especially most joines like shoulders and knees to made those structures match with the head design. I brought more exoskeleton to its body, those exoskeleton also covered by skin. Another big change was its chest, in the old design mouth was on chest and stomach, but I realized that such structure could be very disadvantage if the they do some waist movement like turn round or bend its body, as those teeth are not that flexible. So I changed that design. Now the mouth won't become a problem of waist movement, and still an unique new structure.
Then I have had been working on to give the pilot a cloth, a suit, which it can wear in normal time. I don't want the suit looks too offensive, but a suit which is function heavy and could plug in extra function part like armor.
In the armor layer I spent most energy to explore how to design a function heavy armor in zbrush, but I still have a lot work to do to figure out the design language which can express the unique culture and aesthetics of the alien species.
At meanwhile I was thought about the design of the female character. As in the story she is a mysterious person and she own some lost future human technology. When I was working on her I was trying to build an alien-like suit for her, as I think after hundreds of years our technology and aesthetics will look totally different from today, so I want to try to go a little bit farther to fulfill this idea.
